Rob Jetten’s premiership signals a return to pro-EU, consensus-driven leadership under a minority coalition of D66, VVD and CDA. Jetten is a centrist progressive liberal. He is expected to take a more proactive Dutch role in EU debates on strategic autonomy, capital markets and energy security, while supporting public investment and deregulation at home. Although minority governance may create some legislative unpredictability, his pragmatic consensus-building style should offer businesses greater stability than under the previous government.
As of 23 February, Rob Jetten is officially the new Dutch Prime Minister. He leads a minority coalition of his own party, D66 (liberal progressive), together with VVD (liberal conservative) and CDA (Christian democratic).
Jetten’s premiership signals a return to pro-EU and consensus-oriented leadership in The Hague. For businesses, this means:
Jetten grew up in a Roman Catholic family in the Southern Dutch province of North Brabant. He has described himself as a political nerd, devouring political news from the age of twelve.
He was an athlete in the Dutch national youth team, where he was a pacemaker for future Olympic champion Sifan Hassan. An injury forced him to abandon his sporting aspirations.
An arson attack at a primary school in his hometown motivated him to enter local politics. He rose through the ranks of D66, first leading a local party branch before becoming party leader in 2018. He served as Minister of Climate between 2022 and 2024. As a minister, he was praised for his competence and decisive action during the energy crisis. At 38, he is the youngest and first openly gay Prime Minister in Dutch history.
Jetten’s views are socio-economically centrist, progressive liberal and pro-EU, with a strong focus on climate and education. Rather than ideologically rigid, he can be characterised as a pragmatic consensus-builder. Insiders describe him as optimistic, substance-driven, and solution-oriented.
During the campaign, he proved himself to be a skilful politician and strategist. In a climate of divisive populism and policy stagnation, he sensed perfectly the need for his positive and unity-focused message.

Jetten’s premiership will likely entail a more assertive Dutch role in EU competitiveness and strategic autonomy debates, with opportunities for businesses.
Businesses can also expect more policy stability than under populist alternatives, although legislative unpredictability remains due to minority governance.
