Legislative strategy

We draw on our government, parliamentary and regulatory expertise to help clients understand, engage with and shape commercially relevant legislation.

Legislation can be passed in a matter of months, but impact a business for years. It may determine what a business can do and how and when it does it, create a more favourable operating environment, or have a chilling effect. Yet, few understand how legislation is passed, how it may develop during its passage, or how it can be influenced. We help clients build the case for legislation or to respond effectively when legislation affects their sector. This can range from honing political arguments, refining technical proposals, building awareness of unintended consequences and proposing alternatives, or securing amendments to improve a client's operating environment.

Flint’s approach

We help our clients understand and articulate how legislation, existing or proposed, affects their business, and how to effectively seek, or defend against, changes so that they can thrive.

We enable clients to engage effectively with the legislative process, adapting to whether they are talking to officials, parliamentarians or regulators tasked with developing the legislative detail.

Leverage first-hand expertise
Our legislative experts have first-hand knowledge steering legislation through parliament from within Whitehall, and in the EU institutions. We have seen how and why decisions are taken and ensure our clients understand all the points at which legislation may change or be changed, and who by. Armed with this knowledge our clients gain agility and increase the likelihood of achieving changes.
Boost clients’ preparedness – including parliamentary hearings
Our sector and legislative experts work together to provide an early warning system for businesses, helping to raise awareness of how a policy may develop and become law.
We ensure our clients are prepared for the changes the government is seeking, including preparations for companies ahead of parliamentary hearings, and our expertise in mapping how quickly measures may take effect, reduces the risk of a costly shock to businesses’ operations.
Develop legislative strategies
We help our clients to share their technical knowledge with policymakers. This can be particularly important when the policy intent may be positive or benign, but there is significant room for errors when it comes to detailed drafting.
Explain (geo)political drivers
We help our clients understand the political drivers behind regulation in the UK, EU Member States, and the EU. This enables clients to understand why different jurisdictions adopt different regulatory approaches to similar issues, and project where there could be future regulation.
